Requirements for the Grant of Trinidad and Tobago Commercial
Pilot's License (CPL) Helicopter

 

1) Minimum Age - Eighteen (18) years

2) Medical Examination
a) An applicant for the grant of a CPL (H) is required to pass a medical examination conducted by a Civil Aviation Approved Medical Examiner.

b) The validity of the medical certificate is dependent upon the age of the applicant at the time of issue. If he / she is

 
less than forty (40) years on the date of issue, the validiy will be for twelve (12) months. If he / she is forty years and over on that date, it will be valid for six (6) months.
 
 

3) Examinations - Written / Oral
The applicant would be required to sit and pass the following examinations (with a pass mark of at least seveny percent (70%).

a) Part 1 General (Gas Turbines, Piston Engines, AC/DC Electrics, Hydraulics, Theory of Flight and Flying Controls for Helicopters.

b) Loading

c) Air Law (T & T)

d) FAA CPL Exam

e) Helicopter Type Technical

 

4) Flying Experience (See Aeronautical Knowledge for Helicopter CPL)

5) Flight Test
The applicant must satisfactorily complete a flight test which wil be conducted by an authorized examiner assigned by the Director of Civil Aviation.

6) Application for the Grant of a CPL (H)

 
On succesful completion of all of the above requirements, the following should be submitted to the Civil Aviation Division, Flight Safety Centre, Piarco.
 
  1. Completed application form
  2. Pilot's Log Book (Duty Totalled and Certified)
  3. Medical Certificate
  4. The required fee ($300.00)
  5. Two (2) identification card size photographs (2cm x 2.5cm)
 

7) Duration
The average length of time to complete the program is ten (10) - twelve (12) months.

 
Aeronautical Knowledge for Helicopter CPL
(Assuming fixed wing and Helicopter Experience)
 

1) Total of 150 hours Flying Time, which must include 100 as P.I.C. and 50 hours in a helicopter.

2) The 50 hours in helicopters must include

  • 35 hours P.I.C. and
  • 10 hours in cross-country flight
 

3) 10 hours solo flight in a helicopter including at least

  • One cross-country flight with landings at a minimum of two points, with one segment consisting of a straight line of at least 50 nautical miles from the original point of departure; and
  • One cross-country flight of at least 2 hours in a helicopter in night VFR conditions, consisting of a total straight-line distance of more than 50 nautical miles from the original point of departure.
 

 

4) 20 hours of flight training including

10 hours of instrument training, of which at least 5 shall be in a helicopter.

3 hours of flight training for the practical test within the 60 days period proceeding the date of the skills test.

One cross country flight of at least 2 hours in a helicopter

in DAY VFR, conditions, consisting of a total straight-line distance of more than 100 nautical miles from the original point of departure and

One cross-country flight of at least 2 hours in a helicopter in NIGHT VFR conditions of a total straight line distance of more than 100 nautical miles from the original point of departure.
